party @ the center

Hey there, party people. Once again I'm helping on the volunteer committee for the Center for Architecture's Party@TheCenter. It's a super fun night of music, dancing, and drinks. And who doesn't love an excuse to dress up? Ticket prices have been decreased since last year, so its a really great deal for five hours of open bar and a DJ. I hope to see you NYC'ers there on October 25th!

See my Party@TheCenter posts from 2011 and 2010. Such a fun time!

first friday

The Architectural League took the summer off from First Fridays. Thankfully, we got back in the swing of things in September with an office visit to Weiss/Manfredi

It seems like every office we visit has a drop dead gorgeous view. I am beyond jealous. I probably wouldn't get any work done here. I would be staring out the window all day watching boats sail around on the Hudson River.

fashion's night out

I've been counting down the days since Fashion's Night Out 2011. Well, that's a lie. It kind of snuck up on me. Thankfully, I had enough to time to scour the FNO website and compile a map of all the fun SoHo locations we should hit. This year, I think I repeated free drinks to Kurt enough times to convince him to join Jenn, Christine, and me.

ohio tourists: day two

After taking Kurt's Ohio friends to the Highline, of course we had to take them to Brooklyn Bridge Park as well.

Somehow I didn't get any photos of it, but no trip to BBP is complete without a visit to Bark at Pier 6. Kurt and I have been there a crazy amount of times this summer and are going to try to extend our visits into the fall as long as possible.

smorgasburg

A few Saturdays ago, Kurt and I were going to take some out of town visitors to the Smorgasburg in Brooklyn. They couldn't make it so we went on our own. Kurt loves to support the Red Hook vendors and got a papusa.

ohio tourists: day one

Over Labor Day, Kurt's friends from Ohio, Nick and Ben, were in town to visit with their entire family. I mean, mom and dad were there; so were an aunt and uncle; throw in a cousin and his girlfriend; add another cousin and his wife, and then you have the Peters/Hickey Clan. They had a lot of plans on their own, but thankfully we were able to show them a few small pieces of the city we love.

alabama highlights

I took a long weekend trip down to Alabama at the end of August to visit my parents and sister. It was a nice departure from the city but not quite as quiet as I had hoped. I feel like I was running around doing more stuff than I do here in the city! I can relax when I'm dead, right? It was still a fun time and we squeezed tons of stuff into just a few days. I'm hoping to spend more leisure time (i.e. on the couch) when I go back for Christmas.

I typically don't fly into the Huntsville Airport, but we found a good deal this time. I loved flying in over the city and being able to identify all the roads and parts of town. The landmarks aren't quite as clear as, say the Empire State Building, but notable nonetheless. What I did notice was a boat load of new construction. Sadly, the majority of it is monotonous subdivisions and massive big box shopping centers to replace ones outdated after 10 years. Le sigh. Northern Alabama isn't making any strides to appeal to my urban love. It was still fun being about as far away from NYC as I could get in a weekend!

I had a crazy early flight out of NYC and lost an hour in time zones, so I was ready for lunch at about 10:30. Perfect time to beat the crowds to some delicious barbecue!

lakefront bocce and the journey home

(Last Ohio post! I promise!) While visting Kurt's parents in Ohio, we had a fun dinner out in the nearby town of Lisbon at the Guilford Lake Grille. It was a quiet Sunday evening, so we practically had the entire place to ourselves. Oh, did I mention they have several huge bocce courts in the back? We had a blast. It's going to have to be a regular occurrence when we visit from now on.

cleveland

While visiting Kurt's parents in Ohio, we decided to take Claudio and Manuela up to see Cleveland for the afternoon. Of course, I first consulted the Design Sponge city guide which led us to the neighborhood of Ohio City for lunch. I would love this neighborhood for its graphics alone, but luckily there was lots of other fun stuff going on!

martig farms

While visiting Ohio, we got to stop by a couple of the Martig family farms.

four years later

My four year anniversary of living in New York City was yesterday. Can you believe it?! Sometimes I still have to pinch myself. There are certainly ups and downs, but thankfully the good (public transportation! fun events all the time! interesting things and people around every corner!) is currently outweighing the bad (noise! crowds! teeny tiny spaces! astronomical prices!). I'm having an absolute blast and honestly can't see myself anywhere else right now. I'm looking forward to the next year and beyond! Come visit! Please!

o-h-i-o

A few weekends ago, Kurt and I traveled back to the Buckeye State, where of course they sell Ohio State coolers at the drug store, and of course we had to purchase one. Kurt hadn't been home in a year, so we did lots of visiting with friends and family and enjoying what the Midwest has to offer.

pittsburgh

Kurt and I recently took a weekend trip to his childhood home in Ohio to meet up with Claudio and Manuela as part of their US tour. Before heading to Ohio, we took a quick stop in Pittsburgh for a short, rainy tour of the downtown.

touring with the italians

Remember when Kurt and I traveled to Italy a couple summers ago for Claudio and Manuela's wedding? Well, the happy couple were back in the states for vacation a couple weeks ago. They spent about a week in NYC (before heading off to Niagra Falls and Ohio) which meant we got to drag them around to all our favorite attractions. One sunny Sunday, we took advantage of all the great outdoor fun in Brooklyn.

kristin's birthday!

Several weekends ago, Kristin rang in the big 3-0 and had a party at Rocky Sullivan's to celebrate.
